Edwin Arzeta’s lyrical drawings use widely recognizable forms as foundation for studies in color and pattern. His compositions are influenced by a range of media: he often listens to recordings of poetry read aloud while he works in the studio, and draws specific patterns from archival fashion collections and fabrics. Arzeta keeps a long running list of phrases from audiobooks, poems, magazines, television, and signs he sees around Los Angeles, where he is based, which he pulls from to title his works. The title for this show, Green and Violet Blue, comes from the lyrics to a 1988 song by The Go-Betweens called “Love Is a Sign.” In preserving associative yet open-ended objects and moments via drawing, Arzeta hopes to expand a viewer’s experience of recollection, longing, and empathy.
